Choosing a camera for a classified area
- Start from the area classification drawing: the zone (0, 1 or 2), the gas group (IIA, IIB or IIC) and the temperature class decide the camera, not the brand.
- A typical Zone 1 marking is Ex db IIC T6 Gb: a flameproof housing, the strictest gas group, a surface temperature limit of 85 °C, and protection level Gb, which is suitable for Zone 1.
- Zone 0 is watched from outside it, by a camera placed in Zone 1, Zone 2 or an unclassified area.
- Near the coast (Mina Al-Ahmadi, Shuaiba) salt air corrodes ordinary housings; 316L stainless steel lasts.
- Explosion-protected models are made by Axis and Hikvision, among others. Where the operator has an approved vendor list, that list decides.

Questions about this service
Do all cameras on an oil site need to be explosion-proof?
No. Only cameras inside a classified area need Ex certification. Gates, fences, offices and most yards are normally unclassified, and industrial cameras rated for heat and dust are right there. The classification drawing decides.
Why use thermal cameras on the fence?
A thermal camera sees heat rather than light, so it detects a person at night, in glare or in light dust where an ordinary camera shows nothing. Visible cameras at the gates then identify faces and plates.
How long is footage kept?
We size storage for 120 days at the cameras' real bitrate; the site's security policy can ask for longer.
Can cameras record when a gas or fire alarm goes off?
Yes, where the fire and gas system provides a dry contact or a network signal. The camera nearest the alarm switches to event recording, and the operator sees it on the monitor.
