About the TP-Link TL-SG1218MPE

The TL-SG1218MPE is a popular switch for small and mid-sized CCTV systems, and that is what TP-Link designed it for. Sixteen gigabit ports supply PoE+ from a 250 W budget, about 15 W per port with all 16 busy, which covers 16 typical IP cameras, or a mix of cameras, access points and phones. Two non-PoE gigabit ports and two combo SFP slots connect the NVR and an uplink over copper or fibre.

It adds a light layer of management through a web page or TP-Link's Easy Smart utility: up to 32 VLANs to keep the camera network separate from the office, QoS with four queues and port priority for the most important cameras, rate limiting and storm control, IGMP snooping for multicast video, static link aggregation, port mirroring and cable diagnostics. PoE Auto Recovery restarts any camera that stops responding.

The 1U, 19-inch chassis has an internal power supply and two fans, and it is rated for 0 to 50 °C. It switches 36 Gbps with an 8K MAC table. With a full 250 W load it draws about 296 W, so size the UPS accordingly.
