Can the Netgate 1100 handle a 500 Mbps internet line?

Yes — with up to 927 Mbps routing and around 607 Mbps firewall throughput, it comfortably serves lines up to roughly 500 Mbps with inspection enabled. For gigabit lines with heavy VPN use, we recommend the Netgate 2100 or 4200.

Does it need a license or subscription?

No. pfSense Plus is included with the appliance, and the firewall, VPN, and shaping features keep working without annual per-user fees.

Can it replace my ISP router?

Yes, it typically sits behind the ISP modem/ONT (or replaces the router where the line allows) and takes over firewalling, DHCP, VPN, and traffic control for the whole network.
